ICYK - Project

New Islamic Centre of Yellowknife Project

The proposed new Islamic Centre of Yellowknife (new-ICYK) will be of sufficient size to fulfill current and future needs of the

Muslim Community. In addition, the new-ICY will be designed with an Islamic look to increase the image of our centre

in the local community.

Our existing building for Masjid The new building will have designated spaces available for youth sport and family get-together

activities to celebrate various Islamic occasions particularly the Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha and other celebrations. The new-ICYK

will present good opportunities for the Muslim youth to get connected with the Masjid. There will also be enough space

available for Islamic learning classes/services.

For women, there will be a place to congregate and to learn Islamic knowledge and share their Islamic learning experiences. This

will strengthen the Muslim community and create bonds between various ethnicities. The participation of women in Muslim

community activities introduces children to the Masjid at an earlier age and provides the necessary role models for Muslim girls.

The design intent will be focused on several but mutually supportive goals including:

Separate prayer halls and social spaces for men and women

Creatively represent the diversity within the Yellowknife Muslim community

Give the community a sense of pride in their civic contribution

Respond to the harsh weather conditions and climatic change effects

Remain identifiable within a global Islamic architectural tradition

Provide venue for various social events Provide youth program and indoor sports

Requirements for
New Building

Based on observations, it is estimated that the total Yellowknife Muslim population is in the proximity of 300 to 330 individuals. Currently the Friday prayers are predominately attended by 70-80 male Muslims. During Eid prayers, the number of worshippers is significantly higher as women and children also come for these prayers. Additionally, a few families from other nearby towns also visit Yellowknife to attend Eid prayers and celebrations with family and friends. The construction of a new-ICYK is expected to result in an increased growth of Muslims in Yellowknife for the following reasons:
As the new-ICYK becomes more known, the number of attendees at the ICYK are expected to grow.

The level of involvement of Muslims in Islamic rituals and activities is expected to increase with the new-ICYK.

Attract more Muslims from the southern cities, particularly families who will be encouraged to move to Yellowknife for work or business.

The new-ICYK will have full range of services for adults and children that are viewed as an essential necessity by most Muslim families.

The new-ICYK is expected to have a fulltime Imam, to offer Islamic education for the Muslim youth. This service is further expected to help encourage families with children to move to Yellowknife.

Provide venue for various social events Provide youth program and indoor sports
Based on the population projections for the next three to four decades, the new-ICYK requirements are determined. It is

estimated that in the year 2045 the projection would be: The number of Muslims in Yellowknife will be in the proximity of 800 or

more. The Friday prayers’ attendance is expected to increase to about 250-300 individuals including a considerable number of

women. - Around 867-766-3124 Muslims are expected to attend Eid prayers and celebrations.

It should be noted that the forecasts are very modest compared with the rate of growth in many Muslim communities in the big

cities across southern Canada. However, the growth of Muslims here may be higher as currently Yellowknife provides many

economic benefits and it is also a relaxing and family-oriented location. Yellowknife also provides many land and

 water based activities.
